36th IGC: The 36th International Geological Congress will be held virtually from March 20-22, 2022. Globally renowned geologists are expected to participate in the three-day Congress.
The theme of the 36th International Geological Congress is “Geology: Basic Sciences for a Sustainable Future”.
The 36th International Geological Congress will be a joint effort of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the Ministry of Mines and the Indian National Science Academy and the science academies of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal.

The International Geological Congress has been described as the Olympics of Geology and is held once every four years. The IGC is organized under the auspices of the International Union of Geological Congress (IUGS).
The International Geological Congress sees the participation of approximately 5000-7000 delegates from all over the world.

The talks will aim to uncover the complex interactions of Earth’s processes and the events that regulate their symbiosis. Geology in general plays an important role in addressing the issue of sustainability, which is the biggest concern of the world today.
India along with its regional partners had bid to host the 36th International Geological Congress in India in 2020 during the 34th IGC in Brisbane in 2012.
