Later, tremors were also felt in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu and parts of neighboring India, although no casualties were reported in India.

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal early Wednesday, killing at least six people, destroying several houses in the western district of Doti, and creating panic in New Delhi.

Doti’s deputy superintendent of police Bhola Bhatta confirmed an earlier figure shared by Home Ministry official Tulsi Rizal that five others were seriously injured when eight houses collapsed.

Local media showed images of mud and brick houses destroyed by the earthquake and rescuers digging through the rubble in search of survivors. Nepali Army spokesman Narayan Silwal said at least two people were reported missing.

Nepal is still rebuilding after two major earthquakes in 2015 killed nearly 9,000 people, destroyed entire villages and centuries-old temples, and caused $6 billion in damage to the economy. Doti is about 430 km west of the capital, Kathmandu.

Eyewitness Ram Upadhyay, chairman of East Chowki Rural Municipality in Doti district, said he was in a nearby village when the earthquake occurred at 2:12 pm Nepal time. “It shook a lot and I immediately ran away. Now we are collecting details including bodies.”

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba wrote on Twitter, expressing condolences to the victims’ families. “I have directed the agencies concerned to make arrangements for immediate and proper treatment of the injured and casualties.”

Spokesperson Silwal said a ground rescue team of the Nepalese Army had been rushed to the spot, and two helicopters were waiting at nearby Surkhet and Nepalgunj.

Kalpana Shrestha, a senior bureaucrat in the Doti district, said details were being collected from villages near the quake’s epicenter, and a child was among those rescued from under the rubble.

Nepal’s earthquake center has estimated the magnitude of the quake at 6.6. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) had estimated the quake at 5.6.

The EMSC said the quake was centered about 158 km northeast of Pilibhit, a populous city in the neighboring Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, and struck at a depth of 10 km.
