AirThings Masters 2022: Rameshbabu Pragyananand, A 16-year-old Indian Grandmaster defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the eighth round of the AirThings Masters online rapid chess tournament on February 21, 2022., Both the chess players had a poor start in the competition.

The AirThings Masters chess tournament consists of four games played on each of the three days (February 19–21) of the preliminary phase while the three rounds will be played on February 22, 2022.

As Pragyanand became the third Indian and the youngest player to beat Carlson, batting great Sachin Tendulkar congratulated the Indian Grandmaster on the stupendous victory and wished him a successful career ahead.

Pragyananand: How did the Indian Grandmaster beat World No. 1 Carlsen?

1. Pragnananda halted Carlsen’s three-game winning streak on the second day of the 16-player all-player-all online tournament, which is part of the Champions Chess Tour.

2. As Carlsen held onto the points table with three consecutive wins, he ran into Pragyanandana in the eight-round and stumbled as the Indian player registered his first win in any format of chess against Carlsen.

3. Pragyananand opted for the Terash variation in the French defense and got an advantage as Carlsen’s mistake and the Indian Grandmaster won in 39 moves. It was also Pragyananand’s second win in eight matches in the event.

4. Earlier, Pragyanand had defeated Armenian-American Levon Aronian and drew with Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri and Le Quang Lim of Vietnam.

Who is Rameshbabu Pragyananand?

Rameshbabu Pragyananand is a 16 year old Indian Grandmaster. He is a chess prodigy and the fifth youngest person to have achieved the title of Grandmaster. Pragyananand is behind Abhimanyu Mishra, Sergei Karjakin, Gukesh D and Javokhir Sindarov.

In 2013, Pragyanand won the World Youth Chess Championship Under-8 title and he won the Under-10 title in 2015.

Later in 2016, he became the youngest international master in history at the age of 10 years, 10 months and 19 days. In November 2017, Pragyanand achieved his first Grandmaster Criterion in the West Junior Chess Championship, where he finished fourth with 8 points.

AirThing Masters 2022

AirThing Masters has launched the 2022 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. Altogether 16 players will compete in the round-robin phase of the online event before progressing to the knockout phase of eight. The AirThing Masters 2022 tournament is taking place from February 19-26, 2022.
