Shakuntala Choudhary, Gandhian social activist and freedom fighter passed away

• 102-year-old Gandhian social activist Shakuntala Choudhary passed away on February 21, 2022 in Guwahati.

• She was from Kamrup of Assam and worked for the betterment of the villagers, especially women and children. She was also known as Shakuntala Baidev.

• In 2022, the Government of India also named Shakuntala Choudhary as the recipient of the Padma Shri award. Prime Minister Modi took to Twitter to express grief over the demise of the social worker.

• The Prime Minister also highlighted that he will be remembered for his lifelong efforts to promote Gandhian values.

Air India will operate flights between India and Ukraine

• Amid rising tensions between Ukraine and Russia, Air India has announced that it will operate three flights between India and Ukraine.

• Three flights will be operated by Air India between the two countries on February 22, 24 and 26.

• The airlines have also announced that seats are available on these flights and booking is open through Air India booking services, call centre, website and authorized travel agents.

• Air India’s statement comes at a time when the United States and its NATO allies warned of the possibility of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Government approves 296 clusters under Syama Prasad Mookerjee Rurban Mission

• The Ministry of Rural Development has approved 296 clusters under the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Mission. The 6th anniversary of the launch of the mission was celebrated on February 21, 2022.

• The mission was launched by PM Modi in 2016 to develop 300 clusters overall in India by providing social, economic and physical infrastructure potential.

• Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Rurban Mission focuses on cluster based integrated development through spatial planning.

• Rurban clusters have been identified showing increasing signs of urbanization in rural areas across the country.

• External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held bilateral talks with his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian in Paris on February 20, 2022.

• The two officials talked about the close cooperation between India and France in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic and also agreed to further deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries.

• Both sides have adopted the ‘India-France Roadmap on Blue Economy and Ocean Governance’ which aims to enhance partnership in the field of blue economy.

• The Foreign Ministers of India and France agreed to intensify India-EU relations under the French Presidency.
