Scientists have discovered the world’s largest known bacteria, first visible to the naked eye, in the salt water of a red mangrove swamp in Guadeloupe, in the Lesser Antilles. Guadeloupe, a group of islands, is a French overseas territory. Thiomargarita magnifica is the first bacterium visible to the naked eye and in the form of white filaments roughly the size of human eyelashes. Giant white bacteria were found lurking in rotten leaves sunk in the swamp.

Khabi Lem has become the most followed person on TikTok, surpassing Charli D’Amelio. The 22-year-old social media sensation rose to the top of the video-sharing platform with 142.4 million followers, while 18-year-old Charlie D’Amelio has 142.2 million followers. With 90.1 million followers, Bella Porch has the third-highest number of followers on TikTok. Khabi Lem started making TikTok videos in 2020 after losing her job during the COVID-19 pandemic. He posted his first video in March 2020.

Odisha government won the first prize in the National MSME Awards for 2022 to States/UTs for their outstanding contribution to promoting and developing the MSME sector. Odisha’s Kalahandi district also won the third prize in the “National MSME Awards 2022 for Aspirational Districts for their outstanding contribution to promoting and developing the MSME sector”.

4. (a) Tata Play
NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) launched GSAT-24 on an Ariane 5 rocket operated by French company Arianespace from Kourou in French Guiana, South America, on June 23, 2022. GSAT-24 is a 24-Ku band communication satellite. With PAN coverage in India to meet the needs of DTH applications. The entire capacity of the satellite, weighing 4,180 kg, has been leased from direct-to-home (DTH) service provider Tata Play.

5. (b) Dinkar Gupta
The Center appointed former Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta as the Director-General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on June 23, 2022. He is an IPS officer from the 1987 batch. He will become the first full-time Director General of NIA. Retirement of former NIA chief YC Modi on May 31, 2021. CRPF Director General Kuldeep Singh had an additional role as Director-General of NIA after Modi’s departure. Dinkar Gupta will serve until his retirement, March 31, 2024, or until further government orders, whichever comes earlier.

On June 21, 2022, the White House announced the withdrawal of an almost complete ban on the use and production of antipersonnel landmines, with the exception of the military confrontation against Pyongyang on the Korean Peninsula.
