New Twitter boss Elon Musk responded to the uproar on Wednesday over the $8 monthly fee his company announced for verified accounts on the microblogging site. Reiterating his position on charging users, the Tesla CEO and SpaceX owner tweeted: “To all complainers, keep complaining, but it will cost $8.”

In a later tweet, Musk referred to the 1960s British comedy troupe ‘Monty Python with a YouTube video titled ‘Plot’. “Stole the idea of charging for insults and arguments from Monty Python, tbh,” the Twitter owner wrote.

A day earlier, they announced Twitter’s new $8 monthly fee for verified users and a host of social networking site features they’ll have access to. In multiple tweets, Musk explained that verified accounts will get “priority in answers, mentions and searches, the ability to post longer videos and audios, and half as many ads.”

“Twitter’s current Lords and Farmers system to know who has a blue checkmark or not. Power to the people! Blue for $8 a month,” he tweeted.

The backlash began earlier this week after reports poured in that Twitter would soon charge verified accounts a $20 monthly fee to keep their badges. Currently, blue tick users do not pay anything to the microblogging site.

Musk finally broke his silence on Tuesday after responding to author Stephen King’s dissent over the monthly fee issue. “20 bucks a month to keep my blue check? Fuck they should pay me. If it’s set up, I’ll go like Enron,” King had tweeted.

The Tesla CEO replied that Twitter “needs to pay the bill somehow” and “can’t rely solely on advertisers.” “How about $8?” Musk tweeted.

“I will elaborate the logic before implementing it. This is the only way to defeat bots and trolls,” he wrote in another post, replying to the author.

Hours later, Musk tweeted the official announcement about the monthly fee.

The company widely launched Twitter Blue subscriptions about a year ago, so users could view ad-free articles from certain publishers and make other changes to the app, including a different colour for the home screen icons.

On several occasions since he bought Twitter, Musk has announced that he will renew the verification process on Twitter.

Twitter accepted Musk’s offer to buy it, and Tesla’s CEO officially took over last week after a visit with several twists and turns, including one he cited as a breach of the agreement. The purchase agreement was terminated. Mutual purchase by the company.
