Goa Elections 2022: Pramod Sawant resigns as Chief Minister of Goa; to continue as caretaker CM

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant resigned from his post on March 12, 2022 to pave the way for the formation of a new government in the state. The resignation came two days after his party – the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the single largest force by winning 20 seats in the 40-member assembly.

Pramod Sawant met Goa Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai at Raj Bhavan around noon and submitted his resignation as Goa CM.

Sawant later told that he has been asked to serve as the caretaker chief minister till the new government is formed. “The governor has given me the appointment letter to be the caretaker chief minister of the state,” he said.

The claim to form the new government is yet to be decided

Pramod Sawant has said that the date has not been decided yet for the BJP to stake claim to form the new government in Goa.

He said the party’s central observers would visit Goa and the other three states – UP, Uttarakhand and Manipur, where the BJP retained power, after which the dates for the swearing-in in the respective states would be announced.

Sawant also said that the process of stake claim to form the new government has already begun with the state cabinet on March 11, 2022 deciding to recommend the dissolution of the House on March 14.
