Google Doodle celebrates Gama Pehelwan of India

Google Doodle celebrates Gama Pehelwan of India, the undefeated wrestling champion.

Today’s Google search engine doodle artwork celebrates the achievements of Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt, an early 20th-century Indian wrestler better known as ‘The Great Gama.’ Created by artist Vrinda Zaveri, Google Doodle also celebrates the wrestler’s impact and the representation he brought to Indian culture.

Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt was widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters and earned the name ‘The Great Gama’ after going undefeated in international bouts with him.

Born in the village of Jabbowal in the Amritsar district of Punjab, Gama won several titles during his career, including the Indian version of the World Heavyweight Championship (1910) and the World Wrestling Championship (1927).

Gama Pehalwan has been a household name in India for decades, often used when commenting on a person’s strengths. According to the Google Doodle blog, when Gama Pehelwan was ten years old, his exercise routine consisted of 500 lunges and 500 push-ups when he was only ten years old.

He ventured into wrestling after the age of 15 and immediately made headlines in Indian newspapers praising Gama as a national hero and world champion. The wrestling champion, a Kashmiri Muslim, is also considered a hero for saving the lives of many Hindus during the 1947 partition of India, which saw the worst communal riots since independence.

Gama Pehalwan spent the rest of her days until his death in 1960 in Lahore, which became part of Pakistan after the partition.

The Prince of Wales presented a silver mace to Gama Pehalwan during his visit to India to honor the great fighter.
“Gamma’s legacy continues to inspire fighters today. Even Bruce Lee is a noted fan and incorporates aspects of Gamma’s conditioning into his training routines!” Google Doodle Blog said.
