Indian Railways tests Kavach train collision protection system with railway minister on board

Kavach: indian railways tested ‘Kavach’, Automated train protection system by pushing two trains towards each other at full speed today, one with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and the other with Railway Board Chairman.

The anti-collision system was tested on the Sanatnagar-Shankarpally section of Secunderabad. The system is expected to prevent the two trains from colliding even though they are at full speed. The latest trial run was conducted to test the SPAD (signal is in danger) to see what happens when a train passes a stop-signal when it is not allowed to do so.

Kavach is the world’s cheapest automatic train collision protection system. Kavach means armor, which was worn by soldiers in medieval times to protect themselves on the battlefield.

Kavach System – How does it work?

  • The Kavach system is designed to help the Railways achieve the goal of “Zero Accidents”. The indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system is designed to automatically stop a train on notice of another train on the same line within a specified distance.
  • When a manual error such as “jumping” of the red signal or any other malfunction is observed, the system will automatically force the trains to stop.
  • In case of failure of the loco pilot, the armor will automatically control the speed of the train by applying brakes.
  • The system works on the principle of continuous updating of speed using high frequency radio communication.
  • The system is SIL-4 (Security Integrity Level – 4) compliant, the highest level of security certification.

The Profit

  • The Kavach system will help prevent accidents like collision of trains on rail tracks.
  • It will cost only Rs 50 lakh per kilometer to operate it, compared to around Rs 2 crore worldwide.
  • Once the system is activated, all trains within a range of 5 km will stop on adjacent tracks to provide safety to the trains.
  • At present, loco-pilots or assistant loco-pilots have to watch for caution signs and signals.
  • It will also include stationary equipment to collect and relay the signaling inputs
    Central system to enable seamless communication with train crew and stations.

Background

The Kavach system was announced in the Union Budget for 2022 as a part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It is planned to bring about 2,000 km of rail network under indigenous system to enable safety and capacity addition in 2022-23.

This system has been deployed on more than 1098 route kms and 65 locos in the ongoing projects of South Central Railway. If it is further planned to be implemented on the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi Howrah corridors, which covers a total extension of about 3000 km.
