  • Scientists have observed a new type of “pentaquark” and the first pair of “tetraquarks”.
  • These quarks will help physicists better understand how quarks join together into composite particles.
  • Quarks are elementary particles that usually combine in groups of two and three to form hadrons such as the protons and neutrons that make up the atomic nucleus.
  • They can also be found in four-quark and five-quark particles or in tetraquarks and pentaquarks.
  • These three exotic particles were generated inside the collider during a collision between two high-energy particle beams.
  • The collisions achieved a record energy of 13.6 trillion electron volts (TeV) in the third run. It will continue to work for four years.

Importance

Physicist Niels Tuning said that the more they analyzed, the more types of alien hadrons we found. He further stated that he is seeing a period of discovery similar to the 1950s, when a ‘particle zoo’ of hadrons was discovered and eventually led to the quark model of the traditional hadron in the 1960s.
