Vice Presidential Candidates 2022: Former West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has been nominated as the vice-president candidate of the BJP-led NDA. President Ram Nath Kovind accepted his resignation from Governor of West Bengal on July 17, 2022. Manipur Governor La Ganesan has been given additional charge of West Bengal.

The BJP announced the candidature of Jagdeep Dhankhar for the Vice Presidential Election 2022 on July 16, 2022. A communique issued from Rashtrapati Bhavan late in the evening of July 17 read, “The President of India has accepted the resignation of Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar as the Governor of West Bengal and the Governor of Manipur, La Ganesan, to discharge the functions of the Governor of West Bengal, in addition to his regular duties. Happy to appoint. Arrangements are made.”

On the other hand, the opposition has decided to field former Rajasthan Governor Margaret Alva as its joint candidate for the Vice Presidential election in 2022. NCP chief Sharad Pawar announced Alva’s candidature after meeting opposition leaders of 17 parties. Margaret Alva is expected to file her nomination on July 19.

The AIADMK has extended its support to the NDA’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Draupadi Murmu and Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The Naveen Patnaik-led BJD has also announced its support for the NDA’s presidential and vice-president candidates. In 2017, the BJD supported Ram Nath Kovind of the NDA for the presidential candidacy and Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the opposition candidate for the post of vice-president.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut had said on July 17 that the party would support the opposition’s vice presidential candidate Margaret Alva. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had earlier confirmed the party’s support for NDA’s presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu.

Mamata Banerjee-led TMC and Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP are yet to extend their support to the opposition’s vice-president candidate. The TMC will likely announce its support for the Vice Presidential candidate by July 21 after a meeting of TMC MPs chaired by the party supremo.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar said opposition parties are approaching TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, seeking support for Margaret Alva’s candidature for the 2022 vice-presidential election.
