India celebrates National Science every year to raise awareness on the importance of science in the country.

National Science Day is celebrated by national institutions across India by organizing public speeches, TV, radio, science films, science exhibitions on topics and concepts, quiz competitions, debates and lectures and science model competitions.

National Science Day 2022: Why is it celebrated on 28 February only?

On February 28, 1928, CV Raman made an important discovery in the field of spectroscopy. This discovery was later named after him and came to be known as the ‘Raman Effect’.

What is Raman Effect?

Professor CV Raman developed interest in this phenomenon during his visit to Europe, where he was curious to know the reason behind the blue color of the Mediterranean Sea. This curiosity led him to further experiment with blocks of ice, transparent surfaces and light. Raman further observed a change in wavelength after the light passed through the ice cubes.

With the use of a spectrograph developed by him, CV Raman discovered that when light passed a transparent material, the deflection changed its wavelength and frequency. This phenomenon he called ‘modified scattering’, later it was called ‘Raman effect’ or Raman scattering.
