Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi steps down, submits resignation to Governor

Punjab Election Result 2022: outgoing Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi submitted his resignation to the Governor of Punjab in Chandigarh today. He told that the governor has asked him and the cabinet to continue in office till the new government is sworn in.

Channi said that he accepts the mandate of the people and continues, “We will always be there to serve the people of Punjab. We will continue to do our duty and be among them. I request the new government to continue the public welfare projects and schemes in the last 111 days.”

Charanjit Singh Channi lost from both Bhadaur and Chamkaur Sahib by 37558 votes and 7942 votes respectively. Punjab Assembly Election 2022. The ruling Congress party, after coming to power with 92 seats in the 117-member assembly, could not stop the massive AAP wave across the state, while the Congress was reduced to 18 seats and the Akali Dal collapsed with around 3 seats.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal said that after his party’s worst performance so far in the elections. “We accept the verdict of the people. We will hold a meeting to introspect the results. We will support the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab.”

The Aam Aadmi Party led by its CM candidate Bhagwant Mann registered a historic victory in the 2022 Punjab elections. AAP has become the first non-Congress and non-Akali Dal party to rule the state. AAP managed to win 92 seats in the 117-member assembly.

Bhagwant Mann himself won from Dhuri constituency by a margin of 58206 votes. In contrast, most of the senior Punjab leaders, including former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, SAD patron Parkash Singh Badal, SAD chief Sukhbir Badal and senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia, lost from their respective seats.

When will Bhagwant Mann take oath as the new CM of Punjab?

AAP Legislature Party meeting is to be held in Chandigarh this evening, during which newly elected AAP MLAs are expected to unanimously elect AAP’s chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann as the leader of their party in the state.

Bhagwant Mann is on his way to Delhi to meet party convener Arvind Kejriwal ahead of the AAP Legislature Party meeting.
