Shortly after the election results were announced, Shashi Tharoor called Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence to congratulate him.

Shashi Tharoor may have lost the election for president of Congress, but for social media users, he is the winner. After announcing the election results, Twitter users thanked Tharoor for making Congress workers proud. He lost the election to (MP) Mallikarjun Kharge of Thiruvananthapuram, who would become the first non-Gandhi president of Congress in 24 years. While Mr Kharge got 7,897 votes, Mr Tharoor got 1,072 votes out of 9,385. After the results were announced, Kharge said he “would do everything to stand his ground.”
Several Twitter users congratulated Mr Tharoor for throwing his hat into the ring. These include former Union Minister Ashwini Kumar, who said Tharoor was not a loser.

He tweeted: “As for Shashi Tharoor, at this point one can say: only one fighter falls down while fighting on the battlefield, children crawling on his knees will never know what he is like. Shashi Tharoor is not a loser.”

Mr Tharoor responded to the folded hands emoji thanking Mr Kumar.

The simple gesture became a hit with Twitter users. The user wrote: “Good fight Shashi ji. You have made Congress workers and Gandhi supporters proud today. Keep strengthening Congress.”

Another said: “He has sown the seeds of a new thought process. We will see him flourish in the years to come. All the best Mr. Tharoor,” said another.

Shortly after the election results were announced, Mr Tharoor called Mr Kharge at his residence to congratulate him. He later tweeted: “Called to congratulate our newly elected President Mallikarjun Kharge and give him his full support. Congress has been strengthened by our competition.”

He also thanked Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for ensuring “free and neutral elections”. He said the Nehru-Gandhi family has and will always have a special place in the hearts of Congress members.
