Sheryl Sandberg announced on June 1, 2022 that she was stepping down as the COO of Facebook’s parent company ‘Meta’. Sherrill announced she is leaving after a 14-year stint that included helping Steyr scandal-prone Facebook dominate advertising. The 52-year-old has been one of the most influential women in Silicon Valley and her passing comes at a time when the social media giant faces an uncertain future and fierce competition.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope will return its first full-color images and spectroscopic data on July 12, 2022. The telescope is the largest and most complex observatory ever built-in space. NASA launched it in partnership with ESA (European Space Agency) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) on December 25, 2021. The telescope went through a six-month preparation period before scientific work began, during which it was examined it aligning the appliance and its mirrors to its space environment.

Rajesh Gera took over as the Director-General of the National Informatics Center (NIC) on May 31, 2022. He previously served as Deputy Director-General in NIC. He has been associated with NIC for more than 31 years. Rajesh Gera had earlier headed several major divisions in NIC, including Satellite Network Division, Video Conferencing Division, and Aadhaar Authentication Division.

The 8th International Day of Yoga’s theme is ‘Yoga for Humanity’. The topic was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ speech on May 30, 2022. The theme aims to portray how during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, yoga helped mankind ease suffering. The theme also aims to highlight how, even in the post-COVID geopolitical scenario, Yoga can play an important role in teaching compassion, kindness, and resilience among people and promoting a sense of unity.

‘Tomb of Sand’ by Geetanjali Shree has become the first Hindi novel to win the International Booker Prize. A Hindi-translated novel has become the first book written in an Indian language to win the prestigious International Booker Prize 2022. Originally published in Hindi as Writ Samadhi, ‘Sand Ka Tomb’ has been translated into English by Daisy Rockwell.

India’s first Liquid Mirror Telescope has been installed on top of a mountain in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. The telescope will help identify transient or variable objects, such as asteroids, space debris, supernovae, and gravitational lensing. The telescope is India’s first liquid mirror telescope and the largest in Asia.

According to the World Health Organization, a deadly hemorrhagic fever (Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) has killed at least 19 people in Iraq and infected 111. According to experts, fatal fever has a very high mortality rate, and there is no vaccine yet. Bleeding from the nose causes severe internal and external bleeding, killing people. So far, the virus has killed about two-fifths of the total cases. This year, the rise in fever cases has stunned officials as it is more than the number recorded in 43 years since the virus was first detected in Iraq in 1979.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami garnered significant votes in Uttarakhand to retain his chief minister’s post. He had earlier lost the seat of Khatima in the 2022 Uttarakhand assembly elections. In the secondary elections, he contested from Champawat and won by a margin of over 55,000 votes.

Turkey’s new name: Turkey will now be officially known at the United Nations as Turkiye after the Turkish government agreed to officially recognize the name change on June 1, 2022, following a request from the Turkish government. Turkey started its rebranding campaign in December 2021. One of the major reasons for the image rebranding is the country’s association with the Turkish bird. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in December: “Turkeys are the best representation and expression of the Turkish people.”

Nominations for the 2021 Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards will close on June 16, 2022. The award is given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to recognize the achievements of the concerned individuals in the field of adventure and encourage the youth to develop the spirit. Flexibility, risk-taking, cooperative teamwork, and quick, smart, and effective reflection in challenging situations. The award consists of a bronze statuette, a certificate, a silk tie or a sari with a blazer, and a cash prize of Rs. 1.5 million

Pakistani film ‘Joyland’, written and directed by newcomer Sam Sadiq, won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section of the 75th Cannes Film Festival on May 28, 2022. Joyland has become the first film from the subcontinent to win the coveted award. Awards in Cannes.
