RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on March 8, 2022 launched a new UPI payment service for feature phones named UPI123Pay. UPI payment gateway includes a three-step method for users to initiate and execute services. An estimated 400 million feature phone users will benefit from this service. and enables them to make digital payments in a secure manner.

The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, presented the Nari Shakti Puraskars 2020 and 2021 at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 8, 2022, on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The President felicitated 29 outstanding women, especially underprivileged and vulnerable women, for their exceptional work towards women empowerment. In all, 28 awards were presented, with 14 awards for each year 2020 and 2021.

India’s first 100% female-owned industrial park has opened in Hyderabad, Telangana. The FLO Industrial Park is being promoted by the FICCI Women’s Organization (FLO) in partnership with the Government of Telangana. The industrial park started its operations with 25 women-owned and operated green projects.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky became the first foreign leader in history to address Britain’s parliament in a virtual speech. “We will fight to the end,” he called for wartime defiance of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, addressing UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and UK MPs directly in the House of Commons.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has achieved a hat-trick in Goa by winning 20 seats in the 40-member Goa Legislative Assembly. The party will form the government in the state with the support of 2 MGP (Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party) MLAs and three independent MLAs.

AAP candidate Jeevan Jyot Kaur is said to be the killer for defeating Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia from Amritsar East by a margin of 6750 votes.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami submitted his resignation along with his cabinet to Uttarakhand Governor Gurmeet Singh. The move comes after Dhami lost from Khatima constituency to Congress’s Bhuvan Chandra Kapri by a margin of 6579 votes, while the BJP registered a comfortable victory in the Uttarakhand Assembly elections 2022 with 47 seats in the 70-member assembly.

The AAP has secured a three-fourth majority in the 2022 Punjab election results, a historic victory for the relatively new party which so far only had a presence in the national capital. AAP has won 92 seats in the 117-member Punjab Assembly. The Congress was reduced to 18, while the Shiromani Akali Dal had to be content with 3 seats. This paves the way for AAP to form the first non-Congress and non-Akali Dal government in Punjab.

After winning South Korea’s presidential election 2022, Yoon Suk Yeol has been elected as the new President of South Korea. Eun Suk Yeol, the conservative, defeated Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party in one of the closest elections, with the last count at least. More than 1 percent of the vote. He will replace South Korea’s current President Moon Jae-in, who could not seek re-election, as the country’s constitution limits a president to a five-year term.

10. (a) US

On March 8, 2022 US President Joe Biden announced a complete ban on all Russian oil, natural gas and coal imports into the United States, in an effort to impose harsher sanctions amid Putin’s war in Ukraine. US oil imports from Russia accounted for a small portion of America’s energy resource, which stood at about 8 percent in 2021, of which crude imports accounted for only 3 percent. Despite this, it is a huge decision as it will have global implications.
