1. (a) July 22

India celebrates National Flag Day on July 22 to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Tricolor. The Constituent Assembly adopted the tricolor in its present form on July 22, 1947. The Indian national flag was hoisted for the first time in independent India on August 16, 1947, at the Red Fort by the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to join the Har Ghar Tiranga movement and hoist the tricolor at their homes between August 13 and August 15.

The new GST rate has now been fixed at 5 percent for pre-packaged, labeled food items, including rice, wheat, flour, paneer, curd, jaggery, lassi, buttermilk, labeled meat (except frozen), and fish. Dried makhana, puffed rice, muslin flour, labeled meat, and fish will also attract 5% GST. All these items were earlier exempted from GST tax; however, loose, unbranded, and unlabeled goods will remain exempt from GST. The new rates of GST have come into effect from July 18, 2022.

3. (d) Karnataka

Karnataka has topped the list of key states in NITI Aayog’s India Innovation Index 2022, while Telangana has been ranked second and Haryana third. Maharashtra ranks fourth, followed by Tamil Nadu at fifth. The India Innovation Index prepared by NITI Aayog is a comprehensive tool for evaluating and developing the country’s innovation ecosystem.

4. (d) Jharkhand 

Draupadi Murmu served as the 9th governor of Jharkhand between 2015 and 2021. She became the first woman tribal governor of India and the first woman tribal leader of Odisha to be appointed governor of an Indian state. He served twice as a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly from the Rairangpur constituency, representing the BJP.

The federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) released its quarterly survey on July 20, 2022. The FICCI survey warns that the Ukraine war will likely keep inflation high and reduce consumer demand. The survey lowered India’s growth forecast for the fiscal year 2022-2023 to 7 percent, much slower than the previous estimate of 7.4 percent and the RBI’s estimate of 7.2 percent.

India is ranked 87 in the Henley Passport Index 2022, with visa-free access to 60 countries. Indian passport holders can travel to 60 countries worldwide without a visa. However, the value of the Indian passport has dropped from 85th place to 87th in the index. Japan has the world’s most powerful passport, with visa-free access to 193 countries, followed by Singapore and South Korea, whose passports would give holders visa-free access to 192 countries, according to the index.

7.(a) Ranil Wickremesinghe

Six-time Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected as the new Sri Lankan President on July 20, 2022. He was elected as the new Sri Lankan President after receiving 134 votes. In comparison, his rival SLPP MP Dulas Alhaperuma got 82 votes, and National People’s Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake got three votes. Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the interim President of Sri Lanka on July 15, replacing Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who submitted his resignation from the post.

8.(c) Kerala

African Swine Fever (ASF) was reported in a field in Kerala’s Wayanad district. This was confirmed by the State Animal Husbandry Minister J Chinchurani on July 22, 2022. ASF is a highly infectious disease with no vaccine. Earlier it was reported in the northeastern states of Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, and Sikkim. Cases of African swine fever were also reported in Uttarakhand in early July.

9. (c) La Ganesan

Manipur Governor La Ganesan has been given additional charge of West Bengal till regular arrangements are made. This comes after President Ram Nath Kovind accepted the resignation of West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 17, 2022. The BJP-led NDA alliance has fielded Jagdeep Dhankhar as its Vice Presidential candidate.

10. (c) United Arab Emirates

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly confirmed on July 21, 2022, that the Asia Cup 2022 will be shifted from Sri Lanka to the UAE. Ganguly said that the Asia Cup 2022 would be held in the UAE, as it is the only place where it will not rain during that time. Amidst the ongoing economic crisis in the country, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board has decided to shift the tournament.

11. (a) Mairaj Ahmed Khan

Veteran Indian shooter Mairaj Ahmed Khan created history by winning India’s first ISSF World Cup gold medal in the men’s skeet shooting final at Changwon, South Korea, on July 18, 2022. The 46-year-old, the oldest member of India’s shooting contingent, shot 37 in the 40-shot final to win the gold. He finished ahead of Korea’s Minsu Kim (36) and Britain’s Ben Llewellyn (26), who won silver and bronze, respectively.

12. (c) Ben Stokes

England all-rounder Ben Stokes announced his retirement from ODI cricket on July 18, 2022. The 31-year-old took to social media to make the shocking announcement. He said the first ODI in Durham between England and South Africa would be his last match. Ben Stokes was recently named the captain of the England Test team. In his note, he said he would give his all to Test cricket and T20 formats.
