  • NITI Aayog & Institute for Competitiveness jointly released the India Innovation Index 2020 to the ranking states and union territories on January 20, 2021 based on innovative capabilities.   • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) shared a photo of the Galaxy Cluster Abell 370 on January 19, 2021 on their social media accounts – Twitter and Instagram. This image depicts a large cluster of galaxies located 4.9 billion light years away from Earth.

Laying the Foundation Stone of Ahmedabad Metro Phase-2

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for two metro projects in Gujarat on January 18, 2021. Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II and Surat Metro Rail Project will help in launching ‘Mass Rapid Transit System’ and will be implemented by Gujarat Metro. Rail Corporation (GMRC).

COVID-19 detected in ice cream in China

  • In a recent development, the novel coronovirus was found in an ice cream in China, the first instance in which someone contracted coronavirus from an ice cream. Subsequently, the Tianjin-area ice cream maker Daqiaodao Food Company was sealed and its ice cream coaches were recalled.

23 January is celebrated as Parakram Diwas

  • India celebrated 23 January 2021 as ‘Parakram Divas’ to commemorate the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The government will now celebrate ‘Parakram Divas’ every year to motivate the youth to work courageously in adverse conditions.

Bhawana Kanth became the first female pilot to participate in Republic Day 2021

  • Bhawana Kanth has become the first woman fighter pilot to participate in the Republic Day 2021 parade on 26 January. The building will display mock-ups of light combat helicopters, light combat aircraft (LAC) and Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft as a tableau of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

UNOCT launches program to counter terrorist threats

  • The United Nations Office on Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) launched a program on 19 January 2021 to combat anti-terrorism threats. This program will enable UN member states to deal with this threat.

India starts supplying COVID-19 vaccine to 6 countries

  • India started supplying COVID-19 vaccines to 6 countries – Nepal, Myanmar, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Maldives and Seychelles on 20 January 2021. The government is awaiting approval to supply vaccines from Afghanistan, Mauritius and Sri Lanka.

Joe Biden became the 46th President of the United States

  • On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden was sworn into the US Capitol with Kamala Harris as the 46th President of the United States who was sworn in as Vice President. Harris became the first Asian-American and African-American woman to hold this position.

India to play a creative role in UNSC

  • India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, TS Tirumurti, during a recent UN Security Council briefing on Syria, said that India is ready to play a constructive role in the UNSC to end the Syrian conflict. Tirumurti requested the international community to provide assistance to Syria to fight COVID-19 and rebuild its infrastructure.
