What are e-Passports? Know Why Govt is introducing e-Passports and How you can Get it?

E-passport of India: India is planning to issue e-passports to its citizens from the financial year 2022-23. Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan shared this in Rajya Sabha on April 7 in response to a question on the government’s plan to issue e-passports in the calendar year 2022.

The MoS stated that the e-passport would be a combined paper and electronic passport. It will have an embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna as an inlay in the back cover. Important information of the passport will be printed on its data page and also stored in the chip.

What is e-passport?

An e-passport is a chip-enabled passport with a biometric identity card. It will not be different from regular transport in terms of verification, application and information. The document and the characteristics of the chip are specified in International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) document 9303.

Who will produce the e-passport?

The new e-passport will be manufactured at the India Security Press (ISP) in Nashik. The Ministry of External Affairs has entrusted the technical responsibility with regard to the issuance of e-passports to the National Informatics Center (NIC).

When will e-passports be issued?

MoS V Muraleedharan informed that the sample e-passport is currently being tested and with the completion of the technical eco-system and infrastructure, the full scale manufacturing will start.

Why is the government introducing e-passport?

The central government is planning to introduce e-passport to strengthen the transparency and security of travel documents.

Passengers with e-passport will not have to stand in queue for long as it can be scanned in few seconds.

The e-passport will have biometric records of individuals and will prevent fraudsters from stealing data and creating duplicate passports.

The chip will fail if the passport authentication is tampered with and no one will be able to erase the data from it.

Know 5 key features of e-passport

1. The e-passport will have 41 security features which include an embossed holographic image and photograph and signature of the holder.

2. It will also contain demographic and biographical information of the e-passport holder.

3. The e-passport will contain biometrics of the holder including iris scan and fingerprint.

4. It will be valid for 5 or 10 years depending on the age of the applicant.

5. The e-passport will be tamper proof, which will protect the data of the holder.

How to get e-passport?

Following are the steps to apply for e-passport-

-Visit the Passport Seva website

– Click on Register Now

-Log in using your existing ID

Click on Apply for New Passport or “Re-issue of Passport”.

– Click on “Pay & Schedule Appointment” to make payment

Documents required for e-passport-

The documents required for an e-passport are similar to that of a regular passport, which includes address proof, proof of date of birth and a current bank account passbook with attached photograph.

Those applying for passport re-issuance will need the original passport, a copy of the first and last page of the passport, ECR or non-ECR page and overview page.
